Mosambi (sweet lime) is one of India's favourite winter juice fruits, and it is cheap in some markets this week. Here is what the news says about supply, why fresh mosambi juice sometimes turns bitter, and how to pick good fruit.
Supply and prices this week
- Surat, 28 October 2026. Divya Bhaskar reported mosambi at ₹50–60/kg, cheaper than onions at ₹70–80/kg.
- Jalna, Maharashtra, 28 October 2026. India Today reported that a farmer in Ghansawangi tehsil uprooted about 1,000 sweet lime trees after drought dried out his orchard. Other sweet lime orchards in the area are also struggling.
- Pune, 26 October 2026. Traders told Hindustan Times that sweet lime and orange prices could rise as arrivals fall.
Mosambi is good value in some cities now, but drought in Maharashtra's orchards may push prices up later in the season.
Why fresh mosambi juice turns bitter
If your juice tastes sweet at first and bitter a little later, you are not imagining it.
- Citrus scientists call this delayed bitterness. A 2019 research review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences explains that delayed bitterness is mainly caused by limonin, and develops gradually after citrus fruit is damaged, juiced or frozen.
- The same review describes how non-bitter precursors gradually convert to bitter limonin under acidic conditions, which is why the bitterness appears some time after juicing. See also the overview of limonin.
- Sweet lime is commonly described as turning bitter within minutes of exposure to air, while it tastes sweet if drunk straight after juicing.
What helps
- Drink it fresh. Make only what you will drink straight away.
- Don't crush the seeds. Limonin is often found at higher levels in citrus seeds.
- Eat segments instead. You keep the fibre, and bitterness is less of an issue.
How to pick a good mosambi
| Check | Good sign | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Heavy for its size (juicy) | Light, hollow-feeling |
| Skin | Smooth, thin, slightly glossy | Thick, dry, shrivelled |
| Feel | Gives a little when pressed | Rock-hard or mushy |
| Colour | Green to yellow-green both fine | Mould or dark sunken spots |
Storage: keep mosambi in the fridge to make it last longer, and use soft or damaged fruit first.
What ICMR-NIN's tables list
From the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017, per 100 g edible portion:
| Item | Energy | Carbohydrate | Total dietary fibre | Vitamin C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sweet lime pulp | 114 kJ (~27 kcal) | ~5.2 g | ~2.1 g | ~47 mg |
| Orange pulp | 156 kJ (~37 kcal) | ~7.9 g | ~1.3 g | ~43 mg |
Mosambi is low in energy and a useful vitamin C source. ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians favour whole fruit and limiting added sugar.

Questions
Why does mosambi juice turn bitter?
Citrus scientists call it delayed bitterness. Once the fruit is pressed, a non-bitter compound in the juice slowly converts to limonin, which tastes bitter. Sweet lime is commonly described as especially prone to it, so the juice tastes best soon after pressing.
How can I stop mosambi juice from tasting bitter?
Drink it soon after pressing, avoid crushing the seeds, and make only as much as you will drink straight away. Sweeteners mask bitterness but add sugar.
How do I pick a juicy mosambi?
Choose fruit that feels heavy for its size, with smooth, thin, slightly glossy skin that gives a little when pressed. Avoid very hard, very light or shrivelled fruit.
Is mosambi a good source of vitamin C?
ICMR-NIN's IFCT 2017 lists sweet lime pulp at about 47 mg vitamin C per 100 g, similar to orange pulp (about 43 mg). Guava lists much higher, about 214 mg.
Is mosambi juice better than eating the fruit?
Eating the segments keeps more fibre and is more filling. If you prefer juice, drink it fresh without added sugar. General information, not medical advice.
