Drought hits Maharashtra citrus: mosambi and orange supply planning for juice bars, sorbets and café refreshers

Drought in Maharashtra is now reaching the citrus orchards that supply much of India's winter mosambi (sweet lime) and orange. Here is what was reported this week and how juice bars, sorbet makers and cafés can plan. Concepts only, no recipes.
What was reported
- Jalna, 28 October 2026. India Today reported that a farmer in Rahera, Ghansawangi tehsil, had to uproot about 1,000 sweet lime trees on seven acres after a water shortage dried out his 12-year-old orchard. Other sweet lime and pomegranate orchards in the tehsil are also struggling, and farmers worry about water for the next eight months.
- Pune, 26 October 2026. Traders at Gultekdi Market Yard told Hindustan Times that falling arrivals were likely to make oranges and sweet limes costlier in the coming weeks.
- Nagpur, earlier in October. Times of India reported orange arrivals at Kalamna market at about 50 trucks a day, against the usual 150–200 at the start of the season, with drought-related fruit drop and smaller fruit.
Together, these point to a tighter and more expensive winter citrus season in western and central India.
What it means for citrus menus
Winter is peak season for mosambi juice, orange juice, citrus sorbets and café refreshers. When supply is short, three issues show up:
- Price swings at the mandi.
- Smaller fruit and lower juice yield per kilo.
- Taste drift. Sweetness, acidity and bitterness vary from lot to lot.
Format options
| Format | Where it fits | Why it helps in a short season |
|---|---|---|
| Citrus sorbet base | Sorbets, granitas, frozen desserts | Consistent sweetness-acid balance across batches |
| Citrus refresher base | Café coolers, sodas, iced teas | Quick to serve, stable colour and flavour |
| Citrus dessert sauce | Cheesecakes, panna cotta, yoghurt cups | Small quantity carries a lot of flavour |
| Fresh fruit (still) | Freshly squeezed juice | Keep for "fresh juice" lines, buy with buffer |
Concept ideas
- Mosambi and mint refresher on a café cooler menu.
- Nagpur-style orange sorbet as a winter dessert counter special.
- Orange and ginger iced tea for compact cafés.
- Citrus and kokum sorbet for an Indian sour profile.
Label and menu checkpoints
- Do not call a base "fresh juice". If the drink uses a preparation or concentrate, the menu name should say so honestly.
- Fruit percentage. If citrus is named or pictured on packaged products, the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 require the percentage.
- "No added sugar". Follow the conditions in the FSSAI Advertising and Claims Regulations before printing it.

Questions
What happened to sweet lime orchards in Jalna?
India Today reported on 28 October 2026 that a farmer in Rahera, Ghansawangi tehsil, uprooted about 1,000 sweet lime trees on seven acres after insufficient rain dried up wells and borewells. Farmers said other sweet lime and pomegranate orchards in the tehsil were also struggling.
Will mosambi and orange prices go up?
Pune traders told Hindustan Times on 26 October 2026 that oranges and sweet limes could become costlier if market supplies weaken in the coming weeks. Actual prices will depend on arrivals, quality and demand.
How can a juice bar or café protect its citrus menu?
Common approaches are agreeing volumes early, holding some buffer stock, and using a consistent citrus preparation or base for sorbets and refreshers so taste and colour do not swing with each fresh lot.
Can a sweet lime drink be called 'fresh juice' if it uses a base?
Names and claims must match what is in the cup and FSSAI's standards. A drink made from a preparation or concentrate should not be presented as freshly squeezed juice.
