Chikoo, also called sapota or sapodilla, is one of the most familiar fruit-stall sights in Gujarat, Maharashtra and the south. It is in mandis this week. Here is what the official Indian data says about it, and some simple ways to enjoy it. General information, not medical advice.
Chikoo in the mandi this week
Agmarknet data, as compiled by TaazaBhav, showed chikoo at a modal price of ₹4,500 per quintal at Mumbai's fruit market on 27 October 2026, in a range of ₹4,000–₹5,000. That is about ₹45 a kilo wholesale, down from ₹6,000 per quintal on 23 October. Shop prices are usually higher than mandi rates.
What ICMR-NIN data says
ICMR-NIN's Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 list sapota (Achras sapota) per 100 g of edible portion:
| Sapota (per 100 g) | IFCT 2017 value |
|---|---|
| Energy | 307 kJ (about 73 kcal) |
| Carbohydrate | 13.9 g |
| Total dietary fibre | 9.6 g (8.5 g insoluble, 1.1 g soluble) |
| Protein | 0.9 g |
| Water | 73.6 g |
That fibre figure is high for a fruit. The grainy texture you feel when you eat chikoo is part of it.
How to pick and ripen chikoo
- Press gently. A ripe chikoo gives a little, like a ripe avocado.
- Scratch the skin. Brown flesh underneath means ripe. Green means it needs a day or two at room temperature.
- Unripe tastes sticky and astringent. That comes from the latex in unripe fruit. Wait it out.
- Refrigerate once ripe and eat within a couple of days.
Simple everyday ways to eat chikoo
- Halved with a spoon, as it is.
- Sliced into a fruit bowl with something tart like orange or pomegranate to balance the sweetness.
- Mashed onto oats or curd in place of sugar.
- In a smoothie with curd, without added sugar. The fruit is sweet enough.
These are ideas, not recipes.
Still a sweet fruit
Chikoo has more energy per 100 g than many watery fruits. ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024) recommend a variety of whole fruits and limiting added sugar. A chikoo shake with sugar and ice cream is a dessert, not a fruit serving. If you have diabetes or another condition, ask your doctor or dietitian about portions. No food cures disease or causes weight loss on its own.
