When sugar-free colas empty from coolers, the thirst does not disappear — it moves. ET HospitalityWorld, 16 October 2026, described India's sugar-free soft-drink rush outrunning bottler plans. Cafés and RTD brands feel the same shopper. Fruit coolers can answer flavour, but they do not automatically answer sugar. This is general information, not medical advice.

📉 Free sugars still apply

ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, advise keeping free sugars below about 5% of energy (roughly 20–25 g/day for an average adult). Free sugars include those added to drinks and those in fruit juices and concentrates. A passion-fruit soda built on puree and soda water is a different load from a cordial-heavy mocktail.

🍹 Practical reading tips

  • Prefer drinks that list pulp/puree and show sugars per serve.
  • "No added sugar" on a juice-heavy drink can still be high in free sugars.
  • Café menus: ask whether sweetness is fruit, syrup or sweetener — see Fruit mocktails and specialty coffee.

Not by default. Cola 'zero' lines use non-nutritive sweeteners. Fruit coolers often carry fruit sugars or added sugar. Check the nutrition table.

Does pulp make a drink healthy?

Pulp adds fruit solids and texture; it is not a free pass on sugars or a medical claim. Not medical advice.

What should cafés brief?

Fruit preparation Brix and acidity, sweetener path, and honest menu wording. Concepts only.
