Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday 29 October 2026 (Drik Panchang). Many women eat sargi before sunrise and break the fast after moonrise. This page is about food groups, not rituals or rules, and it is general information, not medical advice.
Why a balanced sargi matters
A long day without food or water is a real stretch for the body. ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024) recommend that everyday meals draw on several food groups: grains, pulses or other protein, milk or curd, vegetables, fruits and nuts or seeds. They also advise limiting foods high in sugar, salt and fat. The same thinking works for a sargi plate: a mix is gentler than a plate made only of sweets and fried snacks.
A fruit-forward sargi: food-group ideas
- Whole fruit: seasonal choices such as apple, guava, orange, banana or pomegranate add fibre and water. Whole fruit is a better pick than juice.
- Protein: curd, paneer, a handful of nuts or seeds.
- Some whole grain: a little roti, oats or poha, depending on your family's custom.
- Fluids: water, and coconut water if you like it. Avoid very salty or very sugary drinks before a long fast.
Traditional sargi often includes pheni, mathri and mithai. You do not have to give them up. Keep them as one part of the plate rather than the whole plate.
Breaking the fast gently after moonrise
- Start with water, sipped slowly.
- Take something light first, such as a few pieces of fruit or a small bowl of curd, then a normal home meal.
- Go easy on very rich, fried or very sweet foods straight after a long fast.
Who should check with a doctor first
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have diabetes, low blood pressure, kidney problems, or take regular medicines, ask your doctor before fasting. Your doctor may suggest a modified fast. Not medical advice.
