Cold coffee in India used to mean one thing: sweet, milky and blended with ice. In 2026 the menu board reads more like a mocktail list. Refreshers, espresso tonics, sparkling cold brew and nitro are appearing in metro cafés, and they behave very differently from a latte. Here is what each one is, how it tastes, and what to know about caffeine. For the basics of cold brew, filter and instant, see our coffee comparison.

🧊 What is on the new cold coffee menu?

Restaurant India reported in May 2026 that café menus are filled with cold brew, nitro coffee, sparkling espresso, fruit-infused iced teas, cold foam drinks and coconut coffee. It also named Indian twists such as mango cold brew, rose espresso tonic, saffron iced latte and filter coffee tonic, and noted that many cafés are cutting sugar because customers want drinks that taste refreshing rather than very sweet.

🍊 Coffee refreshers: coffee you cannot taste

A refresher uses green coffee extract, made from coffee beans that have not been roasted. Roasting creates the familiar coffee aroma, so a refresher tastes of fruit instead. In an August 2026 interview, a large coffee chain's India business described its Refreshers range as crafted with green coffee extract, in flavours such as Valencia Orange, Strawberry Açaí and Mango Dragonfruit.

The caffeine catch. Because it does not taste like coffee, a refresher is easy to drink like juice. Green coffee extracts also vary: a 2026 study in Food Additives and Contaminants of 23 commercial green coffee bean extract supplements found caffeine ranging from not detectable to 3.82%, and only three products declared caffeine at all. Ask the café what a serving contains.

🫧 Sparkling espresso and espresso tonic

Espresso over tonic water or soda gives a drink that is bitter, bright and fizzy at once. Indian cafés are localising the idea with rose espresso tonic and filter coffee tonic, according to Restaurant India. Tonic water is often sweetened, so check before assuming the drink is sugar-free.

🍋 Sparkling cold brew

Restaurant India's March 2026 cold brew trends report describes sparkling cold brew as cold brew coffee combined with soda, citrus elements or herbs, making a light, fizzy drink that feels closer to a cooler than to a traditional coffee. It suits fruit pairings such as orange, lime or kokum.

🌫️ Nitro coffee

Nitro is cold brew infused with nitrogen gas and poured from a tap. The same Restaurant India report says it has a creamy texture without adding sugar or milk, which makes it a lighter choice for many people than a sweet milky cold coffee.

☕ Caffeine: the number that matters

ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024 put caffeine at 80 to 120 mg in a 150 ml cup of brewed coffee, 50 to 65 mg in instant coffee and 30 to 65 mg in tea, and advise moderation so intake does not exceed 300 mg a day. They also advise avoiding tea and coffee around meals, because tannins interfere with iron absorption.

For packaged drinks, FSSAI's [standard for caffeinated beverages](https://fssai.gov.in/upload/uploadfiles/files/11_%20Chapter%202_10%20(BEVERAGES,%20(Other%20than%20Dairy%20and%20Fruits%20&%20Vegetables%20based).pdf) sets caffeine at 145 to 300 mg per litre and requires the label to say the drink is "Not recommended for children, pregnant or lactating women, persons sensitive to caffeine". Café drinks are made to order, but the same groups are wise to check before ordering.

Is cold brew gentler? A 2018 study in Scientific Reports found cold and hot brews from the same coffees had comparable pH (4.85 to 5.13), while hot brews had more titratable acids and higher antioxidant activity. So "low acid" depends on how you measure it.

Refreshers taste of fruit but carry caffeine from green coffee extract. Espresso tonic and sparkling cold brew are fizzy and milk-free. Nitro is cold brew made creamy with nitrogen. Whatever you order, ICMR-NIN's 300 mg a day caffeine limit still applies.

Questions

What is a coffee refresher?

A coffee refresher is a fruit-flavoured iced drink whose caffeine comes from green coffee extract, made from unroasted beans, instead of brewed roasted coffee. It does not taste like coffee. In an August 2026 interview, a large coffee chain's India business described its Refreshers range as crafted with green coffee extract in flavours such as Valencia Orange, Strawberry Açaí and Mango Dragonfruit.

Is nitro coffee the same as cold brew?

Nitro coffee starts as cold brew and is then infused with nitrogen gas. Restaurant India describes it as having a creamy texture without adding sugar or milk. It is served from a tap, still and cold, rather than with ice and milk.

How much caffeine is too much?

ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024 advise moderation so that caffeine intake does not exceed 300 mg a day. They put a 150 ml cup of brewed coffee at 80 to 120 mg, instant coffee at 50 to 65 mg and tea at 30 to 65 mg. Caffeine in café drinks varies with the size and the number of shots, so ask the café if you are counting.

Is cold brew less acidic than hot coffee?

Not necessarily in pH terms. A 2018 study in Scientific Reports compared cold and hot brews made from the same light-roast coffees and found comparable pH, 4.85 to 5.13. The hot brews had more total titratable acids and higher antioxidant activity.

Are coffee refreshers safe for children?

FSSAI's standard for caffeinated beverages requires the label to say the drink is not recommended for children, pregnant or lactating women, or persons sensitive to caffeine. A café-made refresher still contains caffeine from green coffee extract, so the same caution makes sense.
