Indian pomegranate arils have a new export market. For dairies, ice-cream makers, bakeries and cafés, the bigger point is that ready-to-use arils are a real format worth building menus around. Concepts only.

The news

The New Indian Express (23 October 2026) reported that:

  • the India–New Zealand FTA came into force on 20 October 2026
  • the first consignment of 500 kg of Bhagwa pomegranate arils from Chittoor went to New Zealand, worth $8,260
  • APEDA organised the flag-off, and the shipment went via Bengaluru airport

Supply at home this week

Gaon Junction's UP fruit price list for 27 October 2026 shows anaar at ₹7,600 per quintal wholesale and ₹130 per kg retail in Lucknow, with UP mandis ranging from about ₹6,500 (Pratapgarh) to ₹9,250 (Mainpuri, Shamli) per quintal. These are single-day UP figures, not a national benchmark.

Aril formats and where they fit

  • Fresh chilled arils: best colour and crunch; short shelf life, needs cold chain. For parfaits, fruit bowls, chaat-style desserts.
  • Frozen arils: easier stock planning; check drip loss and colour after thawing. For smoothie bowls and toppings.
  • Aril topping in light syrup: holds shape on cheesecakes, tarts and kulfi.
  • Pomegranate ripple or variegate: a ruby ribbon through vanilla, rose or paan ice cream.
  • Pomegranate syrup or beverage base: for café sodas, iced teas and mocktails.

Concepts to test

  • Anaar and rose yoghurt swirl for winter breakfast menus
  • Pomegranate-mint sorbet with whole arils folded in
  • Shrikhand or kulfi cups finished with frozen arils for Diwali gifting
  • Pomegranate glaze on fruit cakes and Danish pastries

Checks before you buy

  • Spec: aril integrity, colour, Brix, acidity and foreign matter limits.
  • Process: washing, any treatment and storage temperature.
  • Labelling: name the product according to FSSAI fruit and vegetable product standards and do not overstate fruit content.
