Exotic fruit is no longer only imported. October 2026 reports show avocado in Gujarat, protected blueberry units in Himachal Pradesh and dragon fruit with strawberries in Jammu's Samba district. For cafés, ice-cream makers and bakeries, this opens room for "Indian-grown exotic" menus. Here is how we think about formats and concepts. Concepts only, no recipes.

What the October 2026 reports say

  • Avocado in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. IANS (25 Oct 2026) reported a farmer in Kodhiya village (Talaja taluka) who planted 50 avocado plants three to four years ago. 15 trees now yield about 60 kg each, and the report cited prices of ₹800–1,500 per kg. It also said some varieties are harder to sell, and that Gujarat is encouraging avocado, dragon fruit, asparagus and fig along with value-added products.
  • Blueberry in Solan, Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Tonite described an 800 sq m demonstration unit with 600 plants in soilless media, set up under MIDH. Solan district has over 5,000 sq m of protected blueberry cultivation and plans about 35 hectares under HP SHIVA, benefiting about 188 farmers.
  • Dragon fruit and strawberry in Samba, J&K. IANS (19 Oct 2026) reported farmers expanding dragon fruit and strawberry plots, encouraged by yields and horticulture department subsidies.

Supply is real but still small and seasonal. That is the main reason to use a fruit preparation, purée or inclusion rather than build a year-round menu on fresh fruit alone.

Format guide by fruit

FruitWhat it bringsFormats that tend to suit it
Dragon fruit (kamalam)Vivid colour in red-flesh types, mild taste, visible seedsSorbet base, ripple, smoothie bowl topping
BlueberryDeep colour, tart-sweet taste, holds shape when cookedBake-stable filling, cheesecake swirl, yogurt or ice-cream ripple
StrawberryFamiliar aroma, bright aciditySorbet, ripple, milkshake base, Danish filling
AvocadoCreamy texture, mild flavour, rich in fat (IFCT 2017: about 13.9 g fat per 100 g)Smoothie and shake base, gelato concept, spread

Nutrition reference: IFCT 2017 (ICMR-NIN) lists avocado at about 604 kJ (about 144 kcal) per 100 g with 6.7 g dietary fibre, and strawberry at about 103 kJ (about 25 kcal) with 2.5 g fibre.

Concept ideas with a sorbet angle

  • Pink dragon fruit and lime sorbet. The colour carries the menu photo. Lime lifts the mild flesh.
  • Strawberry and kokum sorbet. An Indian sour note with a familiar berry.
  • Blueberry and cardamom swirl for cheesecakes, kulfi-style ice creams and Danish fillings.
  • Avocado and coffee shake concept. Avocado gives the body. This works as a café special next to cold coffee.
  • "Indian-grown exotics" trio cup. Dragon fruit sorbet, blueberry ripple and a mango base, with the origin story on the menu card.

Label checkpoints before you print "no added sugar"

The FSSAI Advertising and Claims Regulations set conditions for a "no added sugar" claim. In short, no sugars may be added, and no ingredients containing added sugars, such as jams, jellies, sweetened chocolate or sweetened fruit pieces. Ingredients used to replace added sugar, such as non-reconstituted concentrated fruit juice or dried fruit paste, are also not allowed. If sugars are naturally present, the label must say so ("contains naturally occurring sugars").

Where Frootrition fits

We develop custom fruit preparations (ripples, bake-stable fillings, sorbet bases) with consistent colour and fruit percentage. That lets a seasonal exotic menu stay on your menu after the fresh harvest ends. Request a sample with your format and target launch.

Questions

Are avocado, blueberry and dragon fruit really grown in India now?

Yes, on a growing but still small scale. In October 2026, IANS reported avocado in Bhavnagar district (Gujarat) and dragon fruit with strawberries in Samba (J&K). Himachal Tonite reported protected blueberry units in Solan, with plans for about 35 hectares benefiting about 188 farmers.

Which format works best for each fruit?

As a concept guide: dragon fruit and strawberry suit sorbet bases and ripples, blueberry suits bake-stable fillings and swirls, and avocado suits creamy smoothie, shake and gelato bases. Trials and shelf-life checks decide the final format.

Can a blueberry or dragon fruit dessert say 'no added sugar'?

Only if it meets every condition in FSSAI's Advertising and Claims Regulations. Added sugars, and ingredients such as fruit juice concentrate, jaggery or honey used to sweeten, generally rule it out. The label must still show naturally occurring sugars.

Why use a fruit preparation instead of fresh exotic fruit?

Local exotic supply is seasonal and still small, and prices vary. A preparation gives a consistent colour, flavour and fruit percentage across the year.

Does Frootrition supply these?

We develop custom fruit preparations for business partners. Share your brief through the sample request page.
