Kiwi grown in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh has crossed its first international border. On 27 October 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia posted on X that "Arunachal's kiwis have made their international debut", with Dubai as the first stop. Here is what happened and what it means for kiwi on your plate.

The shipment

The NewsMill (26 October 2026) reported that:

  • a 1.5-tonne trial consignment of locally grown kiwi was flagged off at the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar on 26 October
  • it is meant for promotional display at hypermarket outlets in Dubai, to test demand and build buyer links
  • the state's trade, commerce and horticulture departments ran it with APEDA
  • no confirmed commercial orders or regular export schedule have been announced

Northeast Today described it as the first-ever consignment of Ziro kiwi. Deccan Herald reported that growers are asking for a GI tag, organic certification and protection from imports.

Where Indian kiwi grows

Kiwi needs cool winters, so in India it grows in the hills: Arunachal Pradesh (including the Ziro valley) and Himachal Pradesh are two names you will see in mandi listings. In city markets, Indian kiwi sits beside imported fruit, so check the label or ask the seller.

How to pick and ripen kiwi at home

  • Ripe: the fruit gives slightly to gentle thumb pressure, like a ripe peach.
  • Hard: leave it at room temperature for a few days. A paper bag with an apple or banana usually speeds this up.
  • Store: once ripe, keep it in the fridge and eat it within a few days.
  • Avoid: very soft, wrinkled or bruised fruit.

Easy ways to eat it

  • Halve it and scoop with a spoon.
  • Slice into a fruit bowl, curd or oats.
  • Pair with guava or orange for a tart winter plate.

Like any fruit, kiwi fits best in a varied diet with many fruits and vegetables (ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024).
